The optimum time division “is like a car rally,” Ms. Cunningham said. “Everybody wants to know who set the time. The identity of the pacer gives an idea of the optimum time — whether the pace was crazy or sane.
“None of the cross-country courses are easy,” she said. “They all challenge both the horse and rider at all levels. There are areas where you have to consider walking to do it correctly, some galloping, some places where you steer the horse through the woods.”
Many riders start steeplechasing in the pairs competition, the veteran rider explained. “It’s a good place to start - people really eiyoy it... A lot of them go out with their knees knocking - but they all come across the finish line with smiles. That's the nice thing about it - everybody has fun!”
There were a lot of smiles at Thornton Hill Farm on Saturday.
