The math teacher also pointed out that teachers with 16-17 years experience will not get a 12 percent increase, as alleged in the superintendent’s proposal, but only a 9.6 percent raise. "I think a piece of paper that gives the wrong impression should be corrected.”
Mrs. LaClava called the addition of bonuses “a nervous procedure... a little carrot dangling in front of people” and maintained that it would be “more honest and more respectful” to pay for experience “in a contractual way.”
Mr. Estabrook explained that an average pay increase of “10 percent across the scale” is one of five options that qualifies a school division to receive the state’s incentive aid.
“That’s the interpretation we’re working from . . . I’m not trying to say we have 10 percent increases at each and every step” of the proposed salary scale.
High school secretary Linda Gray asked why the central office’s secretary and bookkeeper are both proposed to get 14 percent pay increases while secretaries and bookkeepers at the two schools are to receive substantially less.
“That is a judgement call on my part” taken in recognition of “differing levels of responsibility,” Mr. Estabrook replied. “It’s not a comment on competence and certainly not a comment on the personalities involved.”
