Herb Guild sets
first meeting The Goose Greek Herb Guild announces its first meeting for 1987 to be held at the Middleburg Community Center Thursday, March 19, at 10 a.m. Suzanne Miller, speaker from the Washington Cathedral, will show slides and discuss what a ninth century herbal garden really included. The Hortulus or “Little Garden” at the Cathedral has been redesigned according to research of the Carolinian period (742-814 A.D.) and the Carolingian period (751-987 A.D.) Ms. Miller spent months identifying the true herbs that scented medieval gardens of that period. Once the research was done Cathedral horticulturists planted the herbal beds around a baptismal font used in France around 835 A.D. Members of the Herb Guild will have a chance to see the “Hortulus” and other gardens at the Washington Cathedral when a field trip is taken later in the summer. go to regional Winners of the Bland Music Scholarship contest held in Rappahannock last month will be competing in the regional contest, to be held at the Warrenton Junior High School on Sunday, March 15, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Representing Rappahannock County will be Doretha Butler, vocalist, and Leslie Nichols, pianist. In the county contest, sponsored annually by the Rappahannock Lions Club, Nicole Frye placed second in the vocal division. Tamela Butler and Sherry Burke, both pianists, placed second and third, respectively, in the instrumental division.
