Sometimes, for one reason or another, it may be necessary to contact the author of a letter to clarify something; whether it be an illegible word or an unclear point. That is impossible to do when the letter is unsigned.
But, most important, the writer who affixes their signature to the bottom of their letter is putting their personal integrity and reputation behind the substance of the letter.
Our legal system gives a defendant the right to see his accuser face to face in court. We feel our readers should have the same right. An entire community may read an allegation against an individual or an institution which is printed in a newspaper/-- ■ • >
The community, and the person ormstitution accused, have, in this newspaper's judgment, the right to know who the person is who makes the allegation.
The unsigned letters which we have recently received are being held at the newspaper office in Washington. If the author, or authors, wish to have the letters considered for publication, and are willing to use their names, they should contact the Rappahannock News.
Aside from letters judged to be libelous or of questionable taste, this newspaper will not censor letters for content. Sometimes, it may be necessary to edit lengthy letters due to space limitations, but every effort will be made to retain the context and meaning of the original.
But we will not waive our requirement that letters be signed. To do so would abrogate our responsibility to our readers.
