Humidity, air temperature and wind all control the amount and distribution of the pollen the flowers give off. If the weather is too wet and the relative humidity too high, the trees won’t shed pollen and the male flowers drop to the ground without distributing any of their pollen. If the weather is too dry, the pollen sacs or flowers may mature too early and release poorly developed pollen grains.
The weather during spring is good for pollen dispersal and a problem to hay fever sufferers.
But blaming pine trees for all that misery may be wrong.
Generally, pollen will be smaller in hardwoods than in conifers. Pine pollen is large, has small wings, is produced in abundance, and is yellow in color.
