1983, the play was part of the county’s sesquicentennial celebration.
She sat in the parlors of the county’s grand homes and she sat on the front stoops of modest cabins tucked back in the hollows, listening to oldtimers tell of the past. Using these oral history interviews for the bones of the play, Ms. Kiley worked with the first cast of “Voices,” teaching them improvisation, helping them develop their characters and then working in the results to put flesh on the bones.
“ ‘Voices’ takes place in the misty area of the past called memory,” Ms. Kiley explained. “It’s how people feel about the past rather than a portrayal of history as proven fact. These are stories that have been passed from one person to another and one generation to the next, sifted through many hearts on the way.”
