In a letter sent to all county boards of supervisors in early March, Dr. Buttery said that the rabies problem is escalating dramatically. He said his office had reports of 44 rabid animals in the state during the first seven weeks of 1987, compared with 12 reports during the same period last year.
Dr. Buttery termed the expansion of the raccoon epidemic as “significant.” Rabid skunks have also begun to be reported as associated with the raccoon outbreak.
