electricity into the Bay for long periods of time poses significant dangers to human health and the long-term effects may be equally devastating to migratory birds and marine life, Trible said.
“I am particularly concerned about the effects high voltage pulses will have on individuals who live near the Bay. In addition, the impact of the pulses on marine and onshore emergency services communications could jeopardize the safety of those residents.
“Moreover, any use of the Chesapeake Bay which would deny watermen, shippers and tourists access to the water would deprive large numbers of my constituents of their livelihood,” the senator stated.
The Empress II project is important to our national security, Sen. Trible added, “but I am firmly convinced putting it in the Chesapeake Bay is ill-conceived.”
Despite the Navy’s assurances that the electromagnetic pulses pose no identifiable threat to the Bay, the harmful effects of Empress II have not been adequately addressed, Sen. Trible continued. “In light of the potential long-term effects, we should not proceed with a program which is very likely to result in permanent damage to the Chesapeake Bay.”
Supports grant of immunity
Sen. Trible, who is a member of the Senate Select Committee presently investigating the Iran/Contra arms deal, supports the granting of use immunity to Lt. Col. Oliver North, former National Security Council aide, and Admiral John Poindexter, former National Security Advisor to President Reagan.
Under the leadership of Senators Daniel Inouye and Warren Rudman, Sen. Trible said, “Our committee has been a model of bipartisanship. If we resist partisan temptations, the Senate Select Committee investigation can conclude this investigation in relatively short order. Certainly, we must act responsibly but it is equally important that we fulfill our mandate quickly.”
