And the audience is just as eclectic. Computer analyst, Episcopal minister, attorney, aging specialist and school teacher rub shoulders with natural childbirth coach, herbal healer, basket weaver and totem artist.

The mix works, on and off stage. There’s an easy feeling that grows even easier as the evening goes on. The “ease index” can be calibrated by the sing-along. At first, there’s only a lonely hum or two from a back corner. Then, a few whispered snatches of lyric. Finally, full blown accompaniment to what’s “Mowin' in the Wind" on stage.

“We want a lack of tension in the performers AND the audience. We want everybody to be relaxed and we want anyone to feel comfortable about performing,” Mr. Lewis said.

(Middle Street Gallery, a nonprofit artists’ cooperative, ivill become the Gallery Coffee House again this Saturday, May 16. The stage will be open from 8:30 to midnight, and admission is $2.
