On the question of the landfill, Mr. Henry said “that’s been bothering me. I’ve been taking a lot of flak about it - if it were anyone else, in their district, it would be the same thing. “I’ve been against the Stover site . . . I’ve tried to keep people informed.”
Mr. Henry abstained in the supervisors’ vote last week to put a contingency contract on the Stover site because Mount Vernon Realty, where he is an agent, is handling the contract. He said that although Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke advised him that there was no conflict of interest because no money was coming directly to him, he abstained to avoid any possible future legal challenge on those grounds. “If I voted it would have been against - but I felt it best to abstain.”
Asked if he had found his real estate sales and appraisal business to be any conflict in making decisions while on the board, he replied that, if anything, he felt it was a benefit. “In dealing with the reassessment, with questions of values and procedures, the board has been able to use my expertise.
“It has been no problem on any issue I have voted on. I have voted the way that Jackson District residents told me, or in the way that I felt was best for their interests. If there is a problem,” he concluded, “it is more a perceived problem than an actual one.”
