Cats with rabies, Dr. Einarson said, are usually passive. Often the only symptom owners see is a difficulty in swallowing.
Fortunately, protection of cats is as easy as it is for dogs. Vaccinations are similar to those administered to dogs; the first shot is good for one year, succeeding shots protect the animal for three years.
Any veterinarian can administer the vaccine. Both cats and dogs should be vaccinated against rabies as soon as they reach 12 weeks of age. Dogs, of course, are required by state law to receive a rabies vaccination once they are six months old.
