According to the Fauquier County Health Department, contact with a rabid cat forced an elderly woman in south-central Fauquier to undergo the painful and expensive post-exposure rabies shots in January.
Since 1981, eight rabid cats have been reported in Fauquier. Another person in Fauquier underwent treatment after being bitten by a rabid fox near Middleburg earlier this year.
Dr. John Einarson, chief state health officer for Planning District 9, said that most of the cats diagnosed as rabid have been house cats which were taken to veterinarians when they became sick. “We have no idea how many of them with rabies went to the woods and died,” he added.
Asked by the board for his opinion on the rabies threat in the county, animal control warden Jack Bruce noted that he recently got his first case of suspected rabies in a cat. “I have had a couple of positive
