The rabies virus usually enters a victim’s system through saliva after it is bitten by an infected animal. During the incubation period, which can be as long as six weeks, the rabies virus slowly moves through the central nervous system toward the brain.
Once it reaches the brain it turns around, spreading throughout the animal’s other organs. The salivary glands are among the first affected, which produces the foaming at the mouth most commonly associated with rabies.
