An important priority is remaining accessible to diverse age and diverse cultural backgrounds. In India, the idea of entire families going to the theatre together is an important one — three or eyen four generations will be sitting together at a performance, along with a mixture of working people and the elite. In the U.S., with the exception of county fairs and large commercial amusement parks, there are few opportunities for families to participate in this type of shared activity.
It is this idea of family and community sharing that makes Ms. Portman want to shift the base of the company from D.C. to Rappahannock. “Home, family and rhythm of the seasons—I feel that our work needs to be fed at its core in an environment that holds these things as natural,” she says. “Sharing is inherrently important in the development of people. There is growth in the sharing of stories—we would like to work where our skills can be of assistance.”
Further, the presence of the artist as a member of the community “demystifies the artist,” and again enhances the integration of art into life. “In Asia,” she says, “in the villages, the actor walking down the street is no more strange than the goldsmith. In Rappahannock, there are so many people, non-artists included, who are living creatively that the gap is not so great. People are not so terrified of doing things differently.”
