Teigs system will improve
RICHMOND — Secretary of Human Services Eva S. Teig says the state’s child-support system, plagued by faulty computers, slow payments and angry parents, has “turned the comer” and will show dramatic improvements next year.
“The light' is at the end of the tunnel and is shining brightly, to be very corny about it,” Ms. Teig said at a Tuesday news conference. She also said she expected many people to be skeptical.
Also at the news conference, Ms. Teig released documents that outlined the state’s problems with the computer system that was designed to run the child-support system. Ms. Teig said the computer system could not do the job, and blamed its purchase on Social Services Commissioner William L. Lukhard. Mr. Lukhard announced his early retirement this month.
She said that responsibility for the 1985 purchase of the ACSES computer system “can be shared,” but that the fault lies “at the very top — the commissioner’s office. That’s where the buck stops.”
Engine malfunctions
RICHMOND — A state aircraft carrying state Sen. Daniel W. Bird Jr. and several officials of the Baliles administration made an emergency landing after an angina malfunctioned.
The crew and passengers aboard the twin-engine Beech King Air “were in no danger” during the incident Thursday, said John Fuller III, manager of the state Department of Aviation’s operations division.
