When the nest is threatened by intruders, whether animal or human, the birds will attempt to hire them away from the nest. Often, the bird feigns a broken wing, scurrying along the ground with one wing held at a unnatural angle, fluttering and screeching with sounds resembling cries of pain and alarm.

If that tactic fails to draw the intruder’s attention from the nest, the bird’s mate sometimes “dive-bombs” the predator, zooming out of the sky to pass within inches of its head and eyes.

Though these tactics are often successful in protecting the nest, it is not always the case, as evidenced by Mrs. Willis’ experience.
