Projects such as the renovation of the Town Hall will have to wait, he said.
Jim Thomasson said from the audience that “I would argue the virtue of doing the Town Hall as a private project. It could be the sort of project where people, even those divided, could come and work to put something together.”
Council member Evelyn Willis said she was bothered by the lack of information about payment schedules for a loan to refurbish the water system.
"We can’t know that until we get the loan figures,” Mr. Morehouse replied, “but we don’t need them to set a budget.”
“Is it adequate?” asked Council member Nan Thomasson.
“Absolutely,” the mayor affirmed. “We can service a lot of debt with $23,000 per year. I’m not for spending money wildly, but we want to pay off the debt as soon as possible .. . the financing will be amortized by the $23,000 (income) after next year ... I hope, that after all the needs are taken care of, that we can reduce the budget again.”
“The funding (for the waterworks project) is going to be unmerciful,” he said, adding that the budget proposed is merely “a set of guidelines.”
