July, a popular time for vacation and outdoor activities, has been recognized as Parks and Recreation Month in Virginia by Governor Gerald L. Baliles. Citing a “multitude of activities that can result in personal accomplishment, self-satisfaction and family unity for all citizens,” the Governor^ Certificate of Recognition makes Virgina a part of h ’Na* tionaf Parks'knd Recreation Month campaign that “supports and promotes an exhilarating approach to life through the encouragement of park and recreation activities.” The Governor also urged Virginians to “recognize that positive leisure experiences are vital to good physical and mental health and that they enhance the quality of life for all people.”
Virginia State Parks are helping to celebrate Parks and Recreation Month by offering a wide array of interpretive programming and special events. The parks’ interpretive programs are in full swing, offering numerous hikes, demonstrations, canoe trips, and children’s and evening programs.
