Bill seeks protection
WASHINGTON — Virginia lawmakers have introduced legislation in Congress to name four remote areas of the state totaling 25,000 acres as protected wilderness regions.
The sites are in the George Washington and Jefferson national forests. A 2,500-acre parcel in West Virginia known as Mountain Lake would also be protected under the House version of the bill.
The bills were introduced Wednesday in the Senate and House after Westvaco, a major paper and pulp company in Covington, Va., lifted objections over how the wilderness designations would affect its plana for growth.
Named for protection were the Shawvers Run area in the far southwest comer of the state and the Rich Hole, Rough Mountain and Barbours Creek wilderness areas near the border with West Virginia
