RICHMOND—The Virginia State Police announced recently a 90-day grace period for enforcement of new regulations regarding the placement of sunshading material on the rear side windows, rear window or windows of motor vehicles.
Effective July 1 it became illegal to operate a motor vehicle in Virginia with sunshading material affixed to rear side windows, rear window or windows, unless it is of a type approved by the Superintendent of State Police. The law prohibiting the use of nontransparent material upon the front windshield or any other windows remains unchanged.
The extension period will give Virginia motorists more time to become familiar with the regulations and give manufacturers of sunshading material more time to provide a label with a means for permanent and legible installation between the sunscreening material and each glazing surface to which it is applied, certifying that the material is in compliance with State standards and specifications. It will also be required that manufacturers place a statement on each container package that the material is permitted for automotive use in Virginia under standards and specifications adopted by the Superintendent of State Police.
On the issue of illegal lights, the State Police cautioned that Section 46.1-308 of the Code of Virginia prohibits the placement or use of equipment such as any lighting device, warning device or signal device not approved by the Superintendent. Lights placed around license plates and the bar lights in the rear window are examples of illegal lights which are distracting and hazardous to the operator and other motorists. These lights are usually installed by vehicle owners who may be unaware of the regulation. Motorists in violation of these regulations are subject to being charged with a traffic infraction punishable by a fine of not more than $100.
