The local Health Departments in all five counties will screen anyone at risk for having the virus at no charge. This is done by a simple blood test. The results are available within approximately two weeks. Counseling is given to anyone tested. All results are confidential and given only to the individual screened. To assure confidentiality, only code numbers are submitted to the laboratory.
If you can say “Yes” to any of the following, you are at risk for having the virus and it is recommended that you be screened:
• Are you a man who has had sex with another man any time since 1977?
• Have you “mainlined” drugs at any time since 1977?
• Are you a hemophiliac who have received clotting factor products that were not heat treated?
• Did you receive a transfusion of blood any time between 1977 and 1986?
• Have you had several sexual partners since 1977, especially someone who may have had many other partners?
• Did you come to this country from Haiti or a central African country after 1970?
Blood tests may be drawn in the Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic in Culpeper every Tuesday between 1 and 4 p.m. and in Walk-In Clinics in all five counties. Call your local Health Department for times of Walk-In Clinics.
