Dennis Wingfield reported that the four-day total of precipitation he measured in Sperryville was only one inch less than the total for the previous three months combined. The county received 5.48 inches over the weekend, compared to 6.44 inches during the entire summer.
Mr. Wingfield said that the most rain came on Tuesday, when he measured 3.08 inches over the 24-hour period.
He noted that the 5'/2-inch total is already over the monthly norm for September, which is 3.3 inches. “We’ve gotten our precipitation for the month,” he quipped. “Anything more is gravy.” During the first eight-day period of the month, he said, the average would be just about one inch.
As a further note on the unpredictability of weather, Mr. Wingfield added that the total measured so far during September surpasses by 4l/2 times the 1.25 inches he recorded during September 1986. Tempera
