For the next 50 years, they farmed. First they raised Percherons. But the switch to tractors had begun, diminishing the demand for the huge gray draft horses. “And you can’t: keep a Percheron as a pet!” Mrs. Pickens added. So she and her husband went out of the horse business and into the more practical beef cattle production.
Shorthorns still graze the pastures but today the urbanization that was once miles and miles away is at the doorstep. “This is no longer a good place to farm,” Mrs. Pickens said, explaining her decision to sell. “This isn’t even a fit place to live any more.”
