and soil depth to the static water table, both of which range from 20 to 35 feet on the 100-acre site. Trenches for solid waste disposal must maintain a distance of at least five feet from either, he noted.
Mr. Joyce should have preliminary design concepts for the proposed county landfill to present to the Board of Supervisors at the special meeting set for Sept. 14, Mr. McCarthy noted.
In a related matter, the board’s administrative assistant reported that David Chuse, president of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection, has been working on the establishment of a recycling program for the county. If such a program gets underway, it could reduce trash volume and thus extend the life of the landfill, concurrently reducing the cost of solid waste management for the county, he said.
Mr. McCarthy said that he’s also looking into county sponsorship of a “hazardous materials day” for citizens to bring household hazardous wastes to a central point for collection and hauling to a hazardouswaste disposal site. After costs are reviewed, a report on both the hazardous-waste day and progress toward a countywide recycling will be presented at the October board meeting, Mr. McCarthy said.
