‘My Sweet Little Village’
The movie My Sweet Little Village will be playing at the Gay Street Theatre on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 13, at 7:30 each evening. This was the best foreign film of 1986. (Czech with English subtitles). Director Jiri Menzel’s unhurried depiction of life in a Czech village takes its own sweet time, but by the time you’ve realized that nothing much will ever happen, the movie has developed so much cumulative charm that you’ll miss it when it’s gone. Village is about bigcity bureaucrats trying to gull the bumptious hero Otik out of his quaint cottage - but mostly Menzel is concerned with conveying the texture of village life, and he takes an affectionate interest in the idiosyncracies of its people. The movie is rated PG. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.
