and an academic symposium. The most important ceremonies occur on July 13, and justly so: July 13 marks the 200th anniversary of the event that made the existence of Marietta possible. Two hundred years ago on that date the Congress of the old Confederation enacted the Northwest Ordinance.
Though not often referred to today, the Northwest Ordianace of 1787 is an impressive historical landmark nonetheless.
The Ordinance ensured that settlers moving into the Territory would find law and order already established; it guaranteed that when a sufficient number of them had arrived they would be entitled to a good measure of self-government. The Ordinance promised to create new states that would frame constitutions for themselves and enter the federal union on an equal footing with the original ones.
The Ordinance also acted as a sort of bill of rights. It shielded freedom of conscience and secured property rights; it guaranteed such essential liberties as iurv trial and
