Farm had to wait 10 minutes - in mid-afternoon, not rush hour - to squeeze between the cars, and then it was in a spray of gravel thrown up by spinning tires, as the pedal went to the metal before the window of opportunity closed.
Directly across the bottlenecked highway, Ashbum Farms and Ashbum Village are going in With 8,700 residential units. Down the road a few hundred yards towards Leesburg, the Magnavox lot spills over with autos. In the same direction, there’s Xerox. The other way lie Countryside, Broadrun Farms, Sugarland Run and Sterling Park, sub-' divisions already at “build-out” or restricted to infilling. And there’re Sequoia Hunt, Cascades, Mirror Ridge and Potomac Lakes, either approved or on the docket for the necessary rezonings.
In between the Toyotas and Escorts on Route 7, trucks roll along. Not the farm trucks loaded with hay bales or packed with cattle, but cememt mixers, lumber trucks and flatbeds hauling building materials to construction sites.
Mrs. Pickens is right. This is no longer farm country.
She asked real estate agent Tom Jewell to help her market the property. He knew her concerns: this lady is a charter member of the Virginia Citizen Planners Association; she pushed for the creation of a county planning commission and served as its first chairman. “I’ve been involved in planning and zoning ever since Loudoun County has had planning and zoning - even before,” she said, with no little pride.
