I was very much surprised at what a property owner can do,” Mrs. Pickens said. “Someone about to sell property doesn’t have to throw it to the wolves. You can refuse to sell unless certain things are agreed to. Of course, I was very fortunate. But even if you’re dead broke and have to sell, you can TRY to get conditions,” she added.
She has advice for others who would follow her example:
• “Think before you put it on the market. Think about what it is in your land that fills a community need and try to protect whatever that is.”
• “Then get the best land use lawyer you can find to help you do it.”
"Mrs. Pickens is unique,” maintained Mr. Reynolds, who will present the award for community service at PEC’s annual meeting. “She was willing to recognize that her land has tremendous development value, but she never gave up her long-standing commitment to environmental values and to conservation.”
