Throughout the summer, I have read with interest about the PE situation at RCES. As the central figure in all this, I have kept quiet up to „ this point and for. good reason. I don’t want to see this controversy become a personal battle between the teachers, parents and students of RCES and myself. With the opening of school this week, I can no longer hide out in Madison. I have to face my colleagues, students and their parents. It is for this reason that I have decided to share my feelings on the subject.
First of all, I agree that upper elementary students need physical education every day. So do the primary grades. The fact is, there are too many students in this school and too few hours in the school day to practically provide this service.
With double classes, the gym is often too small to allow students the freedom to move much faster than a slow jog without risking injury. The added size, speed and strength of 7th grade students compounds the injury problem. Give these students a ball and even the most cautious play can be hazardous. •
