But Mr. Griswold’s talents are not reserved for the Hollywood set. Recently he was in Culpeper for the Commonwealth Park horse show. During the week he and his wife Marceil spent there, he photographed patrons who had commissioned paintings, as well as showed examples of his work to others interested in his special brand of portraits. Since he works from photos, he described the photograph as “critical” to the realism of the finished work. “You have to see it to be able to draw it,” he said.
Mrs. Griswold, who describes herself as the business half of the partnership, called their vocation “just a fun, fun business.” She added, “I sure believe in the product. That helps a lot.”
That Mr. and Mrs. Griswold enjoy their work is evident. As they relaxed on the porch of Meadowood Bed and Breakfast in Slate Mills, where they stayed during the Commonwealth Park show, the strain of presenting themselves and their art during the days seemed to evaporate into the cool evening air.
Asked how he got into his line of work, Mr. Griswold offered a typically nonchalant answer. “I’ve painted since college. I started with people, then worked into the animals.” Actually, he graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in fine arts, intending to pursue commercial art as his career. 1
After working for agencies for several years, he decided that “hectic life” was not for him. So, he began to freelance his talents.
