Vinton Pickens has a lesson for all conservation-minded landowners in Rappahannock County: you can sell the farm without selling out your principles.
For teaching that lesson, Mrs. Pickens will receive the 1987 Individual Award for Community Service from the Piedmont Environmental Council, to be bestowed at the organization’s annual meeting Saturday, Sept. 12.
The meeting will be held at Mrs. Pickens’ Janelia Farms in Loudoun County.
Most of its 288 acres will soon be developed, ending more than 250 years of agricultural production on the rolling fields and woodlands that stretch from Route 7 to the Potomac River. Most of the land will be turned into Janelia Farm Executive Center, an upscale research and development office park. Most but not all: I6V2 acres, the “home place” with its beautiful and historic old brick residence and attendant outbuildings will be protected by a Virginia Historic Landmark Conservation Easement.
