At a special meeting Monday morning, Rappahannock’s Board of Supervisors approved an amendment to the county’s Comprehensive Plan directing the county to establish a sanitary landfill, with the 99-acre Stover tract east of Amissville “a potential site.” The supervisors then approved the purchase of the property.
The county’s Planning Commission recommended adoption of the amendment after a contentious public hearing last Wednesday. The reference to the Stover tract as a “potential site” was inserted as a compromise. The original language specifically named the Stover property as the site of the landfill.
After voting to amend the plan, Supervisor Nelson Lane told the audience of about a half-dozen residents that he wanted to clarify several allegations made during the public hearing. He said the “most damaging” accusation was that Joyce Engineering, the firm which did the geo-technical report submitted to the State Department of Waste Management,
