«lesuvai oi performances to celebrate the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution will take place Thursday and Friday, Sept. 17 and 18 at Montpelier, the historic home of James Madison in Orange County.
The event is sponsored jointly by James Madison University and the National Trust for Historic Preservation with a grant from the Virginia Bicentennial Commission.
The celebration will feature guest speaker Dr. William Bennett, U.S. Secretary of Education, performances by JMU musical and dance groups and a craft fair featuring artisans demonstrating their work on both days.
Secretary Bennett will speak during the opening program, which begins at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17. Gov. Gerald L. Baliles also has been invited to participate in Thursday’s ceremonies.
JMU President Ronald E. Carrier will open Thursday’s program with welcoming remarks. At 3 p.m., Dr. Carrier, assisted by an honor guard from the U.S. Army, will lay a wreath at the grave of James Madison.
Beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday, the JMU Dance Theatre and guest artists will perform on the lawn near the garden. That performance will be repeated at 1 p.m. Front-porch entertainment at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. will be the Madison Singers. At 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. both days, the Folk Ensemble of the JMU Dance Theatre will perform “Dances from the Time of James Madison.” The JMU Royal Marching Dukes
