The following weekend, Commonwealth Park hosts one of its major spectator events, the 1987 Culpeper Classic, Sept. 26-27.

Featured events at the classic include the International Hunter Futurity East Coast Regional Championships on Saturday. The top 3-year-old hunters in the country will compete for $15,000 in awards, preparatory to the Washington International Horse Show’s international hunter futurity competition Oct. 25-26.

The Saturday evening performance, commencing at 7, offers the $4,000 U.S. Grand Prix League Futures Class, a competition for the Grand Prix horses of the future.

Sunday’s highlights culminate with the $75,000 Grand Prix of Virginia, the first in a series of three Grand Prix offering a total of $250,000 in prize money. The nation’s top show jumpers including Rodney Jenkins, “Virginia’s Redhead” and winner of more than 60 Grand Prix, are expected to compete.
