Cathleen Shiff alleged at the hearing that the maps used by the consultants were those for the Massie’s Corner quadrangle, not the Jeffersonton quadrangle where the landfill is proposed to be located. Mr. Lane explained that the maps in question were not USGS topographical maps, as Ms. Shiff contended, but geological maps which do not exist for that area. The USGS has never mapped that area, he said. “Joyce used the next best available, which was the correct move.”
The Stonewall-Hawthome District supervisor admitted “that’s not to say that there can’t be differences” in the soils between the two areas — “that’s why the borings and specific site studies are being done.”
Leonard E. Joyce attended the meeting, and he backed up Mr. Lane’s explanation of the process used in analyzing the soils on the Stover site.
