contemporary ritual
“First Fruits,” a collaboration of local artists, will be presented at the Rappahannock High School on Saturday, Oct. 10. The work is a contemporary ritual combining dance by Sally Nash and the Last Minute Wood Company, art by Joel Hoyer, and music by Tom Espinola. The performance, assisted by a grant from the Virginia Commission on the Arts, was inspired by The Gift, a novel by Lewis Hyde. Mr. Hyde will be visiting Rappahannock the weekend of the performance to speak and attend the dance.
Gospel Workshop and Concert
Ethel Caffie-Austin, well-known gospel singer and teacher, will conduct a “Gospel for Everyone” workshop this Friday at Promise Land Baptist Church, and Saturday at the Gay Street Theater. Graduates of the workshop will join Ms. Caffie-Austin in a gospel concert Saturday evening at 8. For information, call 675-3347 or 987-8451.
Introduction to oil painting
Local artist Robin Purnell will offer a six-week class to introduce the participants to the basics of oil painting. The groups will proceed step by step through the process from stretching the canvas to applying the final picture varnish. Techniques such as glazing, scrambling, and palette knife painting will be demonstrated.
The classes will be held on Tuesday evenings, 7 to 8:30, Sept. 29 through Nov. 3 at the Middle St. Gallery in Washington. Fee is $60, which does not include materials. Call Robin Purnell at 675-3081.
Tour of Culpeper Hospital set
Newcomers to Culpeper and surrounding counties are invited to attend a free tour of Culpeper Memorial Hospital to be held on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 10 a.m.
“Tours of this type are hosted periodically at CMH to help newcomers in our community become familiar with the hospital and learn about our capabilities and services,” said William A. Gravely, hospital president.
Following the tour, refreshments will be served in the hospital board room, where Mr. Gravely will host an informal discussion about the hospital and its facilities..
