“Make it part of policy,” replied Bryant Lee. “It works well in other school districts.”
“We can change it if it doesn’t work,” agreed Bill Oliver.
Decisions on delayed opening will be made by 5:30 a.m., and will be announced over area radio stations. Dr. Gangel added that the same telephone tree which is in effect for snow days will be used for days when opening is delayed.
Chairman Beverly Massie reminded the members that the School Board’s policy is that on days when school is cancelled or dismissed early, board meetings are cancelled as well. The board’s regular meeting on Tuesday was postponed until Wednesday when the first day of school ended early because of potential flooding after the weekend’s heavy rains.
Asbestos situation in hand
Dr. Gangel assured the board that “we’re in good shape, there is no danger” to students or faculty from two pipe elbow joints insulated with an asbestos compound which were discovered by construction workers above drop ceilings in the high school.
He said that both joints had been encapsulated: wrapped with a polyethelene tape and painted with an acrylic sealer. Several private firms with licenses to deal with the carcinogenic substance, as well as the state Air Quality Control Board, assured the school administrators that was the proper course to follow.
In the past, several other joints insulated with asbestos had been found, Dr. Gangel said, and they had also been sealed. Arrangements will be made to have another survey done of both schools to make sure that there are no other areas where an undiscovered exposure exists, he told the board.
