Parking at RCHS a problem
With the high school parking lot behind the building being used to store construction supplies, students had been allowed to park on the lawn in front of the school. But, after heavy rains turned the area into a muddy quagmire, Dr. Gangel told the board that another solution would have to be found.
Several cars got stuck on Tuesday, and the situation can only be expected to worsen, Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell added, with sporting events and extra-curricular activities requiring even more parking area than that used during school hours.
Dr. Gangel said that he had explored the possibility of grading the area between the baseball field and the track, but was given a price tag of $40,000 for the job, and “we don’t have near those resources.” He pointed out that the budget contains just $2,000 for parking lot maintenance and improvements for RCHS, RCES and the School Board office.
He said that the financial constraints almost dictate that the parking remain where it is now, and that he will meet with an expert to get a recommendation on the best type of gravel to get and how it should be applied.
Several board members questioned restrictions on students driving to school, such as seniors only. Mr. Chappell pointed out that such a rule would impose hardships on students who work or play sports after school.
