American’s Heart Food Festival, a week-long event, began Sunday, Sept. 13 and ends on Saturday, Sept. 19.
This American Heart Association program was developed to focus public attention on the benefits of low-fat eating and heart health.
The Food Festival is an educational event to promote “help your heart” eating. Heart and blood vessel diseases kill hiore people in this country than any other cause of death. Scientists have demonstrated that the typical American diet, high in cholestrol and saturated fat, contributes to high blood cholestrol, a major risk factor in heart disease.
When the body accumulates too much fat and cholestrol, some of this excess may form “plaque” in the walls of the arteries. If this progresses, over the years an artery can become completely clogged with fats, cholestrol and other debris. If the artery supplies the heart, a heart attack can result; if it supplies the brain, a stroke can occur.
The United States has one of the highest rates of cardiovascular disease in the world. The American diet is so rich in saturated or animal fats that even children show evidence of high blood cholestrol. By their mid
