Mr. Barker explained that the rock is sandstone, not a likely choice for a tool because of its softness. Arrowheads and other tools found in this area of the country, he said, are usually made of quartz. It's a hard rock, relatively abundant, which also lends itself to shaping.
If nothing is found by the diggers, the hole is covered back up with sod, leaving the area nearly undisturbed.
If suspected artifacts are found, the location of the hole is logged and marked for later analysis. The objects are placed in a plastic bag and marked with the location they were found.
Mr. McClearen said that, hypothetically, if a significant site is found, a “phase II” survey could be requested. That would involve more extensive gridding and plotting, larger and deeper holes, and the mapping of any artifacts found to establish an idea of the size and composition of the site.
So far, he added, no such sites have been found along the area contracted for the survey. The group will confine its search to the right-of-way to be developed by the highway department They have seen several likely campsites along the route, but Mr. McLearen explained that they will not he disturbed by the project and thus are not within the scope of their study.
