Potomac Edison will be conducting winter helicopter inspections of the electrical system’s distribution lines this month as part of the utility’s ongoing maintenance program.
Helicopter flights are scheduled to take place in the Luray and Madison areas beginning Feb. 8, and then will move on to the Winchester area later that week, weather permitting.
The helicopter crew will survey distribution lines to look for equipment that needs repair or replacement. Helicopters are used to scout the system, especially in outlying areas, because they can hover as close as 20 feet above the lines.
Once these inspections are complete, patrols of extra-high-voltage transmission lines will begin throughout the company’s service territory, which includes 7,300 square miles in parts of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
