I noticed that there were more than a few World War II combat veterans in attendance during the talented young artist's speech. These men fought to defend our country from Nazi Germany and many tens of thousands of their comrades did not return. They deserve more than insults from a woman who claims to have been scared of her father and husband, and therefore fears men because they grow up to be soldiers. She need not be in fear of U.S. soldiers, but if she were an Afghan woman, she surely would have reason to fear Soviet soldiers who have raped Afghanistan since 1979.
I acknowledge an individual’s right to her opinion and artistic expression (unlike the Soviet government), but to publicly insult the members of our armed forces in the presence of citizens from our greatest adversary warrants a response. Rappahannock County has produced many soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines, and I believe the vast majority of them were proud to serve their country.
This is not 19t>8, when it was cool to spit on servicemen returning from Vietnam; this is 1988 and we have matured as a nation and have regained pride in our country and military.
In the center of one of the talented young artist’s pieces of art is a nuclear mushroom cloud. If she (like the rest of us) is unlucky enough to witness a nuclear warhead detonation in our area, it will be a Soviet one (or more) delivered courtesy of the government of our Soviet guests. The best message that was delivered to our Soviet guests was that of the gospel singers who performed so well last Thursday night. Their musical message was that “we need to get right with Jesus.”
