The American Lung Association of Northern Virginia (ALANV) is currently offering a low-cost radon gas testing device for those who wish to assess the radon gas level in their homes.
The Lung Association, in cooperation with Glenwood Laboratories, Glenwood, 111., is offering a threemonth detector to residents of Northern Virginia at a discounted price of $24.95 for a kit containing one alpha-track detector.
In describing the program, E. R. Seward Jr., ALANV managing director, said, “Radioactive radon gas occurs naturally in the ground and seeps into homes through cracks in foundation or basement walls and through other openings. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency believes that exposure to high levels of radon gas over a long period of time is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. The EPA estimates 5,000 to 15,000 annual lung cancer deaths result from exposure to excessive levels of radon gas.”
After the homeowner has had the detector in place in the home for at least three months, it is then sent back to Glenwood Laboratories in a
