cover old tiles and sheeting with a new flooring material. Be careful not to sand or damage the old tiles or sheeting that contains it. If asbestos is suspected in wall compounds or textured paint, leave it alone if the material or surface is in good condition. If it must be repaired or removed, this task should be left to a trained asbestos-removal contractor.
Asbestos has been used in thermal insulation materials, like millboard, asbestos paper, and cement sheets. These materials protect the walls and floors from the heat produced by wood stoves. Do not scrape, sand, drill into, cut, or saw these materials.
Consider other alternative protective methods, such as replacing the millboard with sheet metal held out from the wall by ceramic spacers.
Working with asbestos is not a job for the homeowner or person hired to do odd jobs.
If you’re uncertain about whether a house contains asbestos, first look for a label. If you can’t tell from that, contact the manufacturer or installer to see if they can tell. If that doesn’t work, it’s safest to assume that there may be asbestos in the product.
The most certain way to determine the presence of asbestos is to have a sample tested by a qualified laboratory.
