In addition to new state legislation requiring Social Security numbers for school children, the 1986 Federal Tax Reform Act requires taxpayers to show taxpayer identification numbers (same as Social Security numbers) for dependents five years or over who are listed on tax returns filed after December 31, 1987. This federal law is likely to cause increased numbers of persons to converge on local Social Security offices in the new year.
For application forms and information concerning Social Security numbers, parents and guardians should contact their local Social Security offices as soon as possible.
