While my bill may not be strong enough for some at this time, I believe it is important that we have something on the books right now so that the Commonwealth’s Attorneys have an additional tool to punish those who contribute to, the carnage on our highways.
In my experience, we can always strengthen our laws based upon citizen experience and force, but first we have to set a precedent and get the law on the books. My bill will do that.
Trooper Henderson’s death and the injuries incurred by the others involved in this incident have touched a number of my colleagues in the General Assembly this year. Support for this bill is also coming from the State Police.
As elected representatives of the people of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the best of all possible worlds is to anticipate problems and solve yhem before they occur. In memory of Trooper Henderson, we have a chance to set stricter laws and penalties for those careless enough to take driving Virginia highways and its laws for granted.
