After a week's layoff due to scheduling conflicts, the Panther's basketball team resumed play last week, skating to an easy win against last year's Bull Run District champs, Manassas Park, on Feb. 2.
Despite the disadvantage of playing the Cougars on their home court, the Panthers took the contest to the defending champs and came home winners, trouncing Manassas Park 76-35. Leading the Rappahannock scoring attack were Butch Foster with 18 points, Godfrey Freeman with 14 points, Mike Dearing with a dozen tallies and Eric Dunn with nine.
Last Friday, the Brentsville Tigers came to Rappahannock to face a fired-up Panther team. Despite a valiant effort, which nearly sent the game into overtime, Rappahannock sent the visitors home with their tails between their legs. The Panthers prevailed in this classic cat-fight, 68-67.
Once again, Rappahannock’s big gun, in the person of 6-6 center Godfrey Freeman, led the Panthers to victory. The big man slammed home 18 points before the home crowd, with backup center Doug Smith contributing another dozen tallies.
Again, Mike Dearing helped the team to the win, adding an additional 10 points. District scoring standout Eric Dunn continued his seasonlong consistent efforts, adding nine points to the Panther total.
