Though the turnout at last Wednesday’s town council meeting was sparse, the residents who spoke agreed that improvements to Washington’s water system are needed.
Most of the comments included questions about specific parts of the project, like the doubling of the reservoir’s capacity from 100,000 to 200,000 gallons.
Treasurer Brad Fisher noted that the Virginia Community Development Block Grant program allows lowincome residents without water service to hook into the town system at no charge. The town hopes that the CDBG program will provide $700,000 of the $1.06 million cost of the project.
Mark Bailey called the project, “a necessary improvement. It is inevitable that we have to spend the money, and it’s not getting any cheaper. I think it’s great.”
He asked where the expanded reservoir would be located.
Mr. Fisher explained that it will be placed near the existing reservoir, on a two-acre parcel owned by the town near the end of Piedmont Avenue. He said that the town has already spoken with Nels Parson, who owns the adjacent land across which the water system’s pipes run.
