VPA awards
The staff of the Rappahannock Newscaptured seven writing, photography and design awards at the Virginia Press Association’s winter meeting in Richmond.
A first-place award for lifestyle writing went to staff writer Daphne Hutchinson for her story about Rappahannock County’s contribution to Camp Fantastic, the summer camp for children with cancer held at the Northern Virginia 4-H Center near Front Royal.
For three years, Rappahannock residents have put- on a “Rappahannock Night” for the 80 campers, complete with dinner and entertainment. Mrs. Hutchinson’s story described the experience of the county’s residents and their feelings on meeting this group of courageous children.
Managing Editor Lou Hatter received a first-place award for editorial writing. Mr. Hatter’s entry included an editorial opposing the proposed development of land adjacent to the Manassas battlefield park, a tribute to William Carrigan, and criticism of Washington’s Planning Commission for its inability to muster a quorum for its meetings.
Staff photographer Cindy Mahan, along with Mr. Hatter, received a second-place award for their “A Day at the Races” photo essay. The group of eight photos from last
