The Panthers were not so lucay as their ballhandler, Julian Groves, picked up three fouls in the opening period. RCHS coach Gary Leake was forced to keep his floor general on the bench the rest of the half.
Central finished the opening quarter with a 7-0 run to narrow the Panthers’ lead, 17-16.
Central went ahead by one just moments into the second quarter. The advantage changed hands a couple of times before the Falcons gained it for good with three minutes remaining in the half, 29-27.
Rappahannock was dealt another blow when Danny Ellis drove the lane and was knocked hard to the ground. There was no whistle and little movement by Ellis.
Concerned for his player. Coach Leake sprinted onto the court and was slapped with a technical foul. Walters hit both charity shots and the Falcons converted on the ensuing possession, upping the margin to 37-29.

Coach Leake was optimistic at the intermission: “We played the whole second period with one of our best players (Groves) on the bench and only trailed by two buckets. That’s not too bad.”
